1963 Austin Mini 850 Super Deluxe Speedwell. This mini was bought new in 1963 and sold 52 years later in 2015. It was discovered requiring restoration and had been dry stored for decades and unused. The discovery revealed a very rare ‘one owner car’ which had the Speedwell Sprint Kit consisting of a performance polished cylinder head with uprated double valve springs, front disc brakes, Speedwell Formula steering wheel, Speedwell gauges, Speedwell manifold, twin SU carburettors with Speedwell ram stacks and polished exhaust manifold. The owner lived just 1.2 miles from the famous Speedwell workshops being run by John Sprinzel and Formula One World Champion Graham Hill. They were well known for their tuning of the A series engine and sold conversion kits for the mini and also fitted the kits for customers. The owner lived in Abbey Road, London near the famous Beatles Recoding studio!

The mini left the factory in Surf Blue which is supported by the Heritage Certificate. Once the mini was discovered it underwent a 36 month detailed complete rebuild. The second owner worked with a friend and together they created a car which is as close to the original as they could. They obtained permission to use cellulose paint on the body so to create a period finish and look. The body was restored using Heritage panels and the interior refurbished by Newton Commercial. They even had the carpets made with the original heal pad just on the drivers side. Original window stickers remain and the number plates are the original 58 year old plates! It also has its original stainless steel 3 piece wheel arch trims which are very rarely seen.

There is a history file showing some past MOTs and lots of paperwork and recently found old archive paperwork about the history of Speedwell and the products they made and sold back in the 1960’s. The last MOT found was dated 1980 which shows a mileage of 90953 miles. As part of the restoration it had a new speedo and that now shows just under 100 miles. There are also some old Austin work shop manuals and other period items which come with the mini. This is a very rare and exciting mini in a lovely colour which has been finished to a very nice standard.  It is nice to the see the doors fitting properly which always a challenge with a restored  MK 1 Mini. It is rare to find a factory surf blue Mk 1 mini and to find a 2 owner example with some nice period Speedwell parts makes it even more special and collectable.
