1973 Austin Mini, Cooper Car Company replica. This mini was created in 1976 and was the first replica made of the Works Cooper Cars. It has been owned for the last 43 years by Philip Splett. Philip has helped to run the Mini Cooper Register for the last 35 years including being chairman. His passion for Minis lead to him owning many over the years but he always kept 3 right up to the stage where he is no longer able to comfortably drive them. He has driven the minis all over Europe and can now think back over the great times he has had driving them.
This famous mini has been driven by John Cooper, John Rhodes and Michael Bowler (ex Jaguar racing driver test drive report inc). It has been featured in many hard back books and magazines (including Jeremy Waltons guide to the Coopers) which are all included in the history file. It was first registered as PHR 161M and then had a number plate change to 007 848 which is included with the car. The car has been regularly used and when not in use well stored and meticulously maintained and cared for. This is not a restored car and is in original and wonderful condition. The common areas of corrosion like the front wings, sills and floors are all original and still their body numbers or original spot welds. Mechanically this is a fast and very sorted car. It goes, stops and handles very well and this is a car that you will just take out for a drive for fun. The engine has recently been rebuilt by Roger Hill and is a balanced 1380 GT engine with Cooper S cylinder head and gearbox. It has a Swiftune SW5 cam, cross pin diff, twin 1.5 inch carbs and produces a claimed 93 BHP. It has covered 1000 miles since the rebuild. The brakes are Cooper S 7.5 inch discs with an internally located servo. Corning is helped by wide Minilite GB alloy wheels with matching Yokohama A008 tyres. It has Spax shocks absorbers, adjustable suspension and a rear anti roll bar. The interior has supportive period Corbeau seats, Safety Devises rear cage and an additional rev counter. It has a period radio cassette which 70s tapes inc! The sunroof in a metal internally sliding Britax prototype roof which is very rare and works well (period sales brochure inc). It has twin fuel tanks which worked really well when touring Europe. The Brooklands green paint work is in good condition and the hand painted stripes and decals have been on the car for 43 years. The Works style roof rack is included and can easily be removed. This is a very rare and special car which is on the market for the first time in 43 years.
